Making Progress

Indy has made quite a lot of progress since the last post, so I’m going to just start listing it, some with pictures, some not (sorry).

We returned to the farmer’s market this past Saturday and saw improvement on only this second trip. His leash walking for Ben was a cit better, and he was accepting of the attention people love to heap on corgis, whereas the previous weekend he had seemed hesitant, if not shy. The tomato man’s Goldendoddle didn’t bark at Indy this time and they sat calmly on either side of the sidewalk from each other, and Indy felt no need to hide behind Ben’s legs this time around (yay!). Maybe a meet and greet next weekend?

We’ve been using the raised feeding station for over a week now and I’m glad we got it. I’ve also changed out half his dry kibble for wet food which seems to slow down his eating. I have been petting him after he starts eating and then take and change his water bowl before he is finished. I’ve seen no signs of guarding when I do any of this. We have also taken to letting him lick our plates after dinner (he thinks it’s a treat!) after he demonstrates some of his tricks. Ben noticed that if he (Ben) starts to pet Indy while he is licking the plate that Indy will stop licking and just stand there. He does not do this when I pet him so maybe a sign of the resource guarding, so we will continue to work on that. On a really good note here, Ben has also told him to “leave it” on a few occasions and taken the plate back. Indy hasn’t liked doing it, but he leaves it, and after much praise gets the plate back.

Although Indy does not resist being placed in his crate, he did not seem to have a command for going into it on his own. After just a couple of times he will nor “go in your cage” and “stay” if told to. This morning Ben even made him stay as he strolled to the kitchen to get a baby carrot and placed it on the floor in front of the crate. Indy stayed just as he was told until he was told “okay”. Pretty damn good I think 🙂

One evening Indy did his first “bad” thing, although that bad thing also showed how smart he is. Ben was snacking on rice crackers and shared a few with Indy before bed. Indy led us up the stairs at bedtime as usual, but he then turned around and went back downstairs. In the 6 or so weeks that we have had him, he has NEVER done this, always waiting for one of us to go down. As it turned out, Ben left the package of crackers on the end table and Indy apparently remembered this. From the sofa he was able to steal the package from the table so he could “treat” himself to the last of the tasty crackers. Naughty, yes, but also fair game I think, so it was hard to be mad at him.

In daily life Indy continues to supervise us and tell us what to do, lol. What has become too funny is how he will greet daddy with a bark when he gets home and then runs upstairs (or where ever I’m at) to bark at me to tell me that daddy is home 🙂
