It’s Hot and Itchy Here

We are been working on our leash manners when encountering other dogs on neighborhood walks, although it’s been so hot that it’s been a slow week in that regard. Indy gets very excited when he sees another dog (they’ve all been small), too excited for a meet and greet, so I’ve been turning off to distract his attention and he has been calming quickly. The same goes for the neighborhood cats. In fact, unless we run into a distraction like those, his leash manners have become so good that I sometimes even forget that he is walking loose leash. We haven’t used the gentle leader at all for the last week. Unfortunately, again because of the heat no doubt, there have been no other dogs in the dog park when we’ve been there, so no opportunity for training there.

About a week and a half ago Indy started chewing his nails, but when I checked them they were not too long. This progressed to licking between the pads and then licking (repeatedly) areas on his hindquarters. He very willingly let me check him over, but again, I could find nothing wrong other than his belly skin was now pinker than it had been. Allergies! A trip to the vet confirmed the same, and she told me that just the change in environment, coming to this jungle of an island with blasted pine straw everywhere, could have caused a flareup. He got an allergy injection that will last around 30 days, hopefully seeing him through the worst of summer. I want to note that although he was anxious, Indy was very cooperative with the vet, even when she checked his anal glads. Note: By that evening the chewing and licking had stopped.
