Weekend Update

Our weekend started on Thursday evening to hear the Heart tribute band “Straight On” play at River’s Edge, a large outdoor amphitheater in our city. Indy got lots of admiring attention on our walk from the parking garage, but then he is a corgi after all. We picked a nice spot under the shade of a large tree in the adjoining, dog friendly Marcum Park. The handsome boy continued to attract attention with people stopping for a visit and pet. This evening was the first time he had been exposed to so many people in such a short time, with him readily accepting attention from some, while retreating to hide under my legs for others. We weren’t able to pinpoint the reason for the different reactions, but were not going to push him to meet people he didn’t want to. We were very appreciative that everyone asked permission to approach him, especially the parents of small children (who were kindly told “No”), with no one presuming they could.

Ben wanted an ice cream from the Flub’s ice cream truck conveniently parked near us, and came back with a little cup of vanilla ice cream for Indy. You’d think this was the best thing ever the way he started lapping at the cup.

Once he had licked away the ice cream at the top of the cup, the cup fell on it’s side and Indy had trouble finishing it because he was chasing the cup around. I picked the cup up to hold it for him and this is when we saw the first hint of resource guarding. He bit at the cup twice, but not at me, and not aggressively, but definitely trying to keep it. Once he figured out that I wasn’t taking it he let me hold it for him. I wish we had been able to get a photo of him when he was done with ice cream all over his snout and whiskers, but it didn’t last long as he used his long corgi tongue to clean his face all the way up to his eyebrows (or so it seemed, lol). With any other dog I would not have thought too much of the biting at the cup, it was ice cream after all, but given his history it did give us pause.

We were hit by a few sprinkles of rain and basically right next to us we could see a rain cloud over head AND a rainbow!

Well, that rain cloud decided it didn’t want to just stay next to us and we were treated to one of those wonderful pop up showers of summer, prompting us to grab our things and head back to the car. I wish I could adequately describe the look Indy kept giving us, but I swear he was askiking if we were too stupid to come in out of the rain, lol.

On Saturday morning we took Indy to the farmer’s market downtown, another dog friendly activity, although there were surprisingly few dogs around this particular morning. We visited one of our favorite stands, the man we refer to as “Tomato Man”, who brings his very friendly Goledendoodle to the market with him. We have never in three years heard this dog bark, but on this day he chose to give one large woof at Indy. That was it for Indy and he and Ben went and sat on a nearby wall as I picked my tomatoes, with Indy hiding under Ben’s legs. This was not going to be the day for any doggie meet and greets so we were on our way shortly thereafter. Before returning home we stopped at PetSmart for a raised water and food station to mimic feeding him with his bowl on a step as recommended by the trainer. We also picked out some new toys to try to entice Indy to play more. He seemed to like the crinkly/squeeky fox pelt when we got home, but after no more than five minutes of play he was done, as has been his pattern. Disappointing, but we’ll keep trying.
